Components of a Finishing System
Most finishing systems begin with a material preparation stage. This typically includes a parts washer or a blast booth to properly clean and prepare surfaces before coating.
If a washer is the first stage in the process, a dry-off oven is usually recommended next to quickly remove moisture and prepare parts for either liquid paint or powder coating.
Typical System Breakdown
A standard finishing system may include the following components:
- Blast Booth
- Washer
- Dry-Off Oven
- Liquid Paint Booth or Powder Coating Booth
- Prime Booth and Separate Topcoat Booth
- Final Cure Oven(s)
In many systems, separate ovens are used for the priming and topcoat stages to ensure proper curing and optimal finish quality.

FAQs
What equipment makes up a complete industrial finishing system?
A complete industrial finishing system can include a parts washer or blast booth, dry-off oven, wet paint booth or powder coating booth, cure oven, conveyor system, air makeup equipment, and system controls. The exact equipment depends on your coating process, part size, production rate, available floor space, and finish requirements. Paintbooth.com can design a complete finishing line from load to unload, including equipment layout, engineering, installation, and system integration.
What is the most important part of a powder coating finishing line?
Every stage affects the finished product, but surface preparation, coating application, airflow, and proper curing must work together as one system. Powder coating operators frequently point to poor preparation, inadequate airflow, contamination, or incorrect curing as causes of coating problems. A properly designed finishing system balances the washer or blast process, dry-off oven, powder booth, conveyor speed, and cure oven instead of treating each piece of equipment separately.
Should I choose a batch finishing system or a conveyorized finishing system?
A batch finishing system is generally suited for lower production volumes, large or irregular parts, frequent color changes, or operations that need greater scheduling flexibility. A conveyorized finishing system is designed for repetitive production where parts continuously move through preparation, coating, and curing stages. Choosing between batch and continuous processing should be based on your parts per hour, part dimensions and weight, coating requirements, labor requirements, available building space, and expected future production growth.
How do you size an industrial finishing system for production capacity?
A finishing system should be sized around the largest parts being processed and the required production rate, not simply around the dimensions of the paint booth or oven. Important factors include part size and weight, parts per hour, conveyor speed, washer dwell time, dry-off requirements, spray time, cure temperature and dwell time, loading and unloading requirements, and available floor space. Paintbooth.com uses system layout and CAD modeling to coordinate these components and identify potential production bottlenecks before equipment is installed.
