Humidity & Temperature Controlled Air Makeup Units

Climate Controlled Paint Booths & Environmental Rooms

For aerospace, defense, and other high-spec finishing operations, controlling temperature and humidity is not optional—it’s the only way to consistently meet strict paint specifications and OEM guidelines. At Paintbooth.com, humidity- and temperature-controlled Air Make-Up Units (AMUs) are one of our specialties. While many manufacturers avoid these complex systems, our team designs and supports them every year for demanding applications across the U.S.

Why Control Temperature & Humidity?

If your paint process requires parts to be coated within a tight temperature and relative humidity window, a standard booth won’t cut it. Humidity-Temperature Controlled AMUs help you:

  • Maintain consistent film build and cure quality
  • Reduce rework, rejects, and downtime
  • Hit OEM, aerospace, and defense specifications
  • Create a repeatable environment regardless of outdoor conditions

These systems can be designed as 100% outside air units or recirculating systems with energy-saving modes.

Recirculating vs 100% Outside Air

We can configure your AMU in two primary ways:

  • 100% Outside Air AMUs
  • Simpler design
  • All air is fresh, conditioned air from outdoors
  • Often used where recirculation is restricted or not required
  • Recirculating AMUs
  • Blend of recirculated and fresh air
  • Lower required CFM and smaller exhaust fans, reducing operating cost
  • Additional code-required safety features and EHS considerations are built into the design

For aerospace and defense booths, we commonly integrate NESHAP-compliant 3-stage exhaust filtration as part of the system design.

Cooling Options: Chilled Water vs DX Packaged Units

We typically use one of two cooling strategies:

Chilled Water Systems

Best suited for larger paint booths and environmental rooms, chilled water systems are:

  • More energy-efficient at larger capacities
  • Known for longer equipment life
  • Able to serve multiple booths or rooms from a single chiller
  • Flexible in placement—the chiller can be on the ground or roof

Control advantages include:

  • Better turndown ratios for tight temperature control
  • On-demand pumps for improved efficiency
  • No refrigerant in the AMU airstream (important since many newer refrigerants have a flashpoint)
  • Use of a chilled water valve and VFD-controlled pump to provide more stable booth conditions, rather than simply staging compressors on and off

Chilled Water Coil HVAC Equipment

Paintbooth.com offers chilled water coil HVAC equipment designed to deliver reliable cooling performance for commercial and industrial air handling systems. Our chilled water units are engineered using conservative coil and blower design standards, ensuring the equipment delivers the proper airflow and cooling capacity required for each application.

  • Reliable cooling performance
  • Conservative coil and blower design
  • Precise temperature control
  • High-performance chilled water cooling coils
  • Properly matched blowers for balanced airflow
  • Factory-supplied or field-supplied modulating water valves
  • Optional dehumidification systems and reheat configurations for humidity control
Applications These systems are commonly used in industrial ventilation systems, manufacturing facilities, paint booth makeup air units, process cooling applications, and commercial air handling systems where precise temperature control and dependable airflow are critical.
